BSC PrograMS
These programs are provided on a custom basis for members of the Boulder Skimo Community. Classroom sessions are free for BSC members using the code provided!
Youth Backcountry academy
These single-day programs offer skiers age 13-18 a crash course in backcountry skiing fundamentals. Throughout the winter, we will cover key backcountry skiing topics including navigation, avalanche awareness, skiing in variable conditions, building an effective touring team, and more. Every day we will meet at a local coffee shop and review the key elements of tour planning using the AIARE tour planning framework and then execute our tour as a team! If you are joining the BSC AIARE Level 2, the first youth session overlaps for the first field day!
BSC AIARE Level 2
This level 2 AIARE course is catered to BSC members interested in expanding their expertise and working with mentors in more advanced backcountry terrain.
The level two courses begin to shift the focus from how to avoid avalanche terrain to how to interact with avalanche terrain in a thoughtful fashion. This is a fundamental shift from a high certainty environment–avalanches don’t happen on low angle slopes–to an uncertain environment. We are forced to enter the tricky ambiguous world of accepting and managing risk as opposed to avoiding it. These programs are where having experienced ski guides are essential.
Level 2 Classroom Session
State of the CO snowpack and AIARE 101: Refresher for the AIARE 1 Curriculum and prep for AIARE 2

This program is a valuable opportunity to refresh curriculum topics from your AIARE 1 course and prepare for the level 2.
This program is great for: Anyone who has taken the level one in previous years but it has started to feel a little murky. Anyone who is considering a higher level program and wants to be ready to get the most out of it. Anyone who has yet to take any formal education and want to get a head start going into their AIARE 1.
We will review and refine the fundamentals of tour planning including the AIARE framework, digital mapping tools and using the CAIC public avalanche forecast. We will also do a brief summary of the snowpack conditions for the season and what to expect going forward.

Spring Skiing 101

This program is meant for skiers who like to get out for big days when Colorado is at its finest–the spring. We will discuss the subtleties of corn farming and how to make the most of the spring mountain snow environment in Colorado. Learn about how to time the corn cycle and what spring specific avalanche concerns are the most easy to get caught off guard by. We will also discuss and practice the use of common spring skiing tools including crampons and ice axes.

They say spring is ‘safer’ than winter and yet people still get hurt and killed just as much. Spring is not ‘safer’. Spring is more predictable. We will discuss the pitfalls of spring skiing and the avalanche problems that tend to catch people off guard and how to predict them!
We will also spend some time talking about how to farm the corn cycle and how to time that tour plan perfectly and get an update on the current state of affairs in the Colorado highcountry.
